T1DNet-LACH, Building a scientific community in T1D

The regional T1DNet-LACH Early Career Researcher Workshop brought together young researchers working on type 1 diabetes across Latin America. The workshop aimed to strengthen methodological skills, support the development of collaborative research proposals and identify practical strategies to consolidate and sustain an emerging regional scientific community.

Throughout the programme, participants applied research tools to shared challenges, exchanged experiences from their respective countries and explored opportunities for cross-country collaboration. Particular attention was given to developing proposals capable of responding to regional priorities and contributing to more equitable diabetes care across Latin America.

The NCD Policy Lab supported the workshop and was presented as a model for translating scientific evidence into policy and practice. Its contribution highlighted the importance of connecting research with health-system needs, engaging relevant stakeholders and ensuring that evidence can inform concrete and context-adapted policy responses.

The workshop also demonstrated the value of investing in early-career researchers as future leaders in diabetes research. Their engagement, motivation and sense of ownership reflected a strong commitment to sharing good practices, building lasting professional networks and developing collaborative initiatives that can strengthen the regional response to type 1 diabetes.

By creating a space for learning, exchange and joint development, the workshop contributed to building a more connected scientific community and to strengthening the capacity of researchers to generate evidence that supports better and more equitable diabetes policies and services.
