This study analyzed compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, and burnout levels in firefighters who work in disasters and examined their association with socio-occupational characteristics. This mixed and convergent parallel study was carried out with 555 Brazilian firefighters. In its quantitative stage, participants answered a socio-occupational questionnaire and the Professional Quality of Life Scale. The findings were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics. In its qualitative stage, 66 firefighters were interviewed. The results underwent Thematic Analysis, the inferences of which were sequentially analyzed. Participants had higher compassion satisfaction scores, followed by burnout and secondary traumatic stress scores. Integrating these findings shows how socio-occupational characteristics and work in disaster contexts are related to these phenomena, highlighting the importance of recognizing the profile and the multiple factors that can negatively impact the mental health of professionals and/or strengthen preventive strategies for compassion fatigue.
