[Beta-blockers in cardiovascular medicine - current status - Where are there still "strong" indications for beta-blockers?].
This article presents recommendations for the use of beta-blockers (BB) according to current guidelines and the underlying evidence. Until the last decade, BBs were recommended as first-line therapies for uncomplicated hypertension. This recommendation was discontinued, because studies indicate an overall lower efficacy compared to other antihypertensive drugs. Current cardiology guidelines include recommendations for the indications of symptomatic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), angina pectoris, post-myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, and for the treatment of resistant hypertension.
