[Descriptive analysis of characteristics of stepping activity in middle-aged and old adults in 10 areas of China].
Objective: To investigate the level and intensity of stepping and associated factors in middle-aged and elderly people in the 3rd resurvey of the China Kadoorie Biobank study project. Methods: The stepping activity level (daily steps, daily stepping duration and stepping intensity (peak 1-minute cadence and peak 30-minute cadence) were obtained by using sports bracelet and calculation. The time, area and population distributions were described by using general linear models. General linear regression model was used to identify associated factors. Results: A total of 20 246 study participants were included in the analysis. The women usually had higher stepping activity level compared with men. The study participants usually had lower stepping activity level on weekdays, but the daily stepping duration was higher. The rural residents had higher stepping level (daily steps: 10 262.1, daily stepping duration:166.0 minutes), whereas the urban residents demonstrated greater stepping intensity (step peaks 109.6 steps within 1 minute and 91.3 steps within 30 minutes). The stepping level showed non-linear relationships with age. Daily steps and daily stepping duration peaked at age 60.7 years and 62.3 years, respectively. The cadence peaks within 1 minute and 30 minutes declined significantly after age 69.2 years. Smoking and suffering from chronic diseases were associated with lower stepping level. Conclusion: The stepping level exhibited significant time, area and population specific characteristics in middle-aged and elderly people in China, which were closely associated with lifestyle and health status.
