Too Much Sugar in the Blood is an educational health factsheet published in the Campus Junior Winter 2025/2026 edition. Developed by Professor David Beran in collaboration with journalist Sophie Hulo Vesely from Campus Junior, this page introduces young readers to type 1 diabetes in clear, accessible language.
Through engaging illustrations and step-by-step explanations, the document describes how the body processes sugar, the role of insulin, and what happens when the pancreas no longer produces it. It outlines common symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and rapid weight loss and explains how children living with type 1 diabetes manage their condition daily. Documenting global Insulin Shortages and Stockouts 2023-2025: Comprehensive overview using various data sources
Between 2023 and 2025, the WHO Shortages Database reported a total of 209 insulin shortages across ten countries
This comprehensive overview highlights that insulin shortages and stockouts are a global problem across geographies and income groups, with these problems being widespread and, in many regions, a chronic challenge. The review of lay press coverage across four languages spanning all the world’s regions reveals strikingly consistent themes: recurring supply disruptions, manufacturing gaps, financing and affordability crises, and limited transparency. The aim of this report is to provide a comprehensive overview of the issue of insulin shortages and stockouts, using lay press, review of WHO and government databases as well as questions to the three major insulin manufacturers.

Sources of insulin, oral medicines, and medical devices for diabetes for low-and middle income countries
Different initiatives exist at global level which provide sources where countries can purchase diabetes medicines and medical devices. The objective of this document is to inform key actors (from national programs and procurement agencies/departments) on existing mechanisms that can be used to facilitate access to essential diabetes medicines and medical devices for regular procurement, when the national procurement system is facing difficulties to respond to the needs of the population, or in case of stock out situations in countries. This document also highlights the conditions applicable to benefit from this mechanism as well as contact details.

Pooled Procurement Models: From Informed Buying to Central Contracting
This document is the second in a series to inform and assist policymakers, procurement officials, and others involved in or considering pooled procurement. Our previous article titled Key Considerations for Inter-country Pooled Procurement of Health Products described what pooled procurement is, its main characteristics, and the evolution of inter-country mechanisms over time. In this document, we take a closer look at the four progressive levels of collaboration and integration between buyers in pooled procurement: informed buying, coordinated informed buying, group contracting, and central contracting. The first two models (informed buying and coordinated informed buying) are regarded as modes of information sharing, while the latter two models (group contracting and central contracting) are perceived as modes of procurement.

Key Considerations for Inter-country Pooled Procurement of Health Products
This document has been developed to inform and assist policymakers at national and regional level, government officials, procurement officials, and others involved in or considering setting up pooled procurement mechanisms in inter-country settings. The need for such a document emerged from discussions during an informal technical working group held in Geneva, in July 2024, as part of the pooled procurement component of the NCD Policy Lab project on improving access to non-communicable disease medicines.
